Composing Facades: Combining Vernacular and Classical Proportions for Harmonious Streetscapes
Presented by Lew Oliver
Things need to change but how do we get those things changed? In this talk we’ll cover a handful of these nuts and bolts issues that make incremental, in-fill development more difficult. We’ll provide talking points so that you can go to your planning commission and present both what the issue is, what problems it’s causing, and propose a solution.
This event will be held in Central Standard Time. Details will be sent to attendees upon registration.

lectures
Utrecht, a picturesque canal city with ancient buildings and beautiful urbanism that is teeming with culture, was Lew's home for a time in August (for the second year in a row!) He lectured students enrolled in the "International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture & Urbanism" Summer School on the marriage of master planning and building design and vernacular design. The program integrates architecture lectures, drawing sessions, guided site visits, and collaboration in the form of a group design project that is panel-judged. The students learn in the classroom, but also from the studied environments themselves (see students perched along the canal.) Lew is one of the lecturers that includes real-life project examples that either have been executed or are ongoing, allowing students to see how concepts relating to making cities livable and beautiful can really be applied. The program encourages students to bring lessons home with them so that they may implement building and design wisdom in the places that mean most to them. We are so encouraged about programs like this that engage students in hands-on exercises that encourage immersion in the built environment and drawing as part of the curriculum. Thanks for an amazing time, INTBAU.

ntba 2024
When the target audience of next generation creatives, artists, storytellers, and makers came into clear focus for this project, the decision about who to choose as town planners/urbanists became clear as well. Local designer Lew Oliver was a perfect choice for both the land plan and the single family residential, and Birmingham architect Louis Nequette was tapped to design the Town Center that included the multi-family and ground floor retail. These talented NTBA members worked both independently and together to create a seamless blend of 750 single family homes, townhouses, micro-homes, tree houses, and custom homes (Lew) and 600 multi-family units, restaurants, retail, and commercial spaces (Louis). The addition of a boutique hotel, fitness and wellness center, commercial office and ultimately a 7-acre live audience entertainment complex, has attracted national firms like Nelson Worldwide, Perkins & Will and Marriott Hotels.
KBIS 2024
Lew led talk for The Disruptor series, hosted by KBIS. It is a Ted Talk style presentation that gives the audience an innovative point of view.
Lew is disrupting the design industry top down by weaving sustainability into plans for entire towns and into the houses and construction methods that populate them. For him, sustainability is not a buzz word, but the only way forward for everyone involved in creating complete communities.
He passionately reveals how disruptive thinking forged meaningful connections between sustainability and community designs, giving a comprehensive look at how intergenerational ethics informs today's community needs.
Designers felt the powerfully gratifying energy that sustainable design leadership offers and found inspiration for their own projects along the way.
Innovative Housing summit 2023
Lew Oliver introduced ways that his firm, Lew Oliver Inc., has been innovating in the housing industry for over 2 decades and the learnings, mishaps and everything in between that have led him to the new housing innovations he is working on today.
He reviewed proactive construction methods, how to design for minimal waste, how land planning integrates into sustainability, and how different housing types can be thoughtful in their approach to a sustainable future.
The Innovative Housing Summit is a dynamic forum organized by the MicroLife Institute. The Summit brings together visionaries, policymakers, professionals and subject matter experts to explore innovative, equitable, environmentally-friendly housing solutions.
eeba 2023
Lew Oliver and P. Allen Smith discussed the real definition of sustainability that encompasses a community-wide, macro perspective on the word.
They reviewed the crucial role that net-zero homes and sustainable communities play in reducing our carbon footprint and promoting a more eco-friendly way of life. They focused on the importance of designing communities that prioritize walkability and a connection with nature while also featuring net-zero homes that generate as much energy as they consume. They review how energy efficient homes are constructed and how the consumer saves on utility bills.
They are leading the way in creating a more sustainable and fulfilling way of life while benefiting the environment.
